Its skyline is dominated by the 1,271-metre kunanyi/Mount Wellington and its harbour forms the second-deepest natural port in the world. Hobart also serves as home base for Australian and French Antarctic missions.

The city lies on Country which was traditionally Muwinina land and is still known by its original name nipaluna. Due to the effects of colonisation, today the Aboriginal community in Tasmania is collectively known as palawa. palawa means Tasmanian Aboriginal and the contemporary language palawa kani means Tasmanian Aborigines speak. All of Tasmania or lutruwita is palawa land but contemporary palawa culture is strongly tied to the East Coast.
