Online Yarn with Uncle Vince Ross, Mutti Mutti Elder

Yarning for Aboriginal communities is a way of communicating. It’s about speaking and listening, sharing stories and learning.

Yarning is a traditional method of learning and sharing knowledge for Aboriginal people. Having a yarn with an Aboriginal Elder is an enlightening and enriching experience. It is a unique opportunity to sit with an Elder, listen to their stories, learn and ask questions.

Vince Ross, Mutti Mutti Elder

Uncle Vince’s life story begins in Balranald, NSW where he was born and lived on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, only moving into a house with running water and electricity at 18 years old.

Over his life he worked a variety of jobs and like many in the Aboriginal community he faced discrimination and was regularly refused the opportunity for advancement. These experiences sparked a lifelong commitment to self-determination, opportunity and cross-cultural understanding.

Uncle Vince completed his social welfare studies in 1987 and began a successful career in social work. Through a variety of roles, over the next 30 years, Uncle Vince worked to assist Aboriginal people to realise self-determination and management. Culminating in the founding of award winning Narana Aboriginal Cultural centre in 1992, a multi-million-dollar complex on eight hectares of land in Victoria. Uncle Vince’s vision and Narana’s purpose is to promote reconciliation between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people by developing a better understanding of culture through community connections.

Recognised for his work within community and across the country, Uncle Vince was NAIDOC Aboriginal Elder in 2006. He has won numerous other awards including; Paul Harris Fellow Award from Rotary International, The Visionary Foundation Certificate recognising A True Visionary and is an Active Member with number of National Aboriginal Organisations including the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress.

Today, Uncle Vince is a proud husband, father and grandfather who loves to head off in his van with wife, Enid and is always excited to have a yarn, tell his stories and share his connection to country and culture.

This is an introductory experience and is an exclusive opportunity.

There are only two scheduled yarns with Uncle Vince Ross. Each yarn will be 1.5 hours and there will be a maximum of 10 people per Zoom experience.

A Welcome to Country facilitator will also be on the Zoom meeting. Meeting details and passwords will be provided via email and calendar invitation prior to the virtual yarn.
